The designer at work
On the occasion of the launch of the Baltic 2 chair, the designer Krystian Kowalski invites to his studio and tells about his work. See, what his design process and relationship with modern technologies look like.
The function of the furniture, especially upholstered, has to include its comfort of use. Thus, it was the priority while designing the Grace collection. Closer attention has been paid to the shape of the backrests and the foam filling. As a result, the sculptural form of the chairs, armchairs, sofas and high stools invites to seat for a longer time.

Double softness

The curved backrests of the chairs, armchairs, sofas and high stools wrap around the user, allowing them to rest comfortably. The furniture becomes a little relaxing space, no matter the surroundings. The seats, cast in the .mdd factory, are upholstered in high quality fabrics to enhance the feeling of comfort and softness even further.

Full arrangement of the lounge

Krystian Kowalski has created a set of lounge furniture with various functions: chairs, armchairs, sofas and high stools. The characteristic forms of seats integrated with backrests are what connects them visually. The collection is completed by a coffee table that features a similar curved base. Together, they allow for an arrangement of the entire lounge zone in the office or a living room. They will also be great in public interiors, such as cafés or hotel lobbies.

In love with technology

Krystian Kowalski’s design process is closely bound with technology. The designer seeks inspiration in the possibilities of the factory and the properties of the material. The CNC and the foam casting technologies have contributed to the final form of the Grace collection. As he is constantly trying to increase the comfort of his furniture, Krystian works on improving their features even after the premiere.

As a hands-on designer my work process combines a full-scale models and prototypes with technology research and advance cad modelling. This methodical approach is focused on revealing the essence of each design. I believe experiencing the product is the only way to develop valuable furniture. Fundamentally I look at design as an exercise in creating value.
