High stools – tall stools for the office, bar and kitchen

Reception desks, kitchen islands, stand-up desks or lounge areas in open-plan offices – each of these spaces requires a different approach to choosing the right seating. Standard chairs often prove to be too low, which, when combined with high worktops, makes sitting less comfortable. .mdd office and bar stools are the answer to this need – high stools designed with comfort, ergonomics and durability in mind, forming part of the brand’s cohesive furniture collections.

Bar stool or kitchen high stool? The 25–30 cm rule

The choice is simple and depends directly on the height of the worktop and the seat. Kitchen high stools have a lower seat, which is why they work best with kitchen islands and standard worktops. It is precisely this difference in height that determines comfort and correct posture whilst sitting. There is one rule for selection: there should be around 25–30 cm of free space between the seat and the worktop to comfortably rest your legs and maintain a natural, ergonomic body position.

In the .mdd range, the role of semi-bar stools is fulfilled by kitchen variants with a seat height of approx. 620–680 mm, designed to fit standard kitchen islands (worktop approx. 85–95 cm). These proportions provide comfort similar to that of a dining chair and allow for comfortable leg support. Classic bar stools, with a seat height of approx. 780–820 mm, are designed for higher worktops (110–120 cm) – reception desks, bars and customer service points. Most models are available in both height variants, and an additional option is the Cool stool with an adjustable seat height, which can serve as both a bar stool and a half-bar stool.

Bar stools on four legs, a sledge base or a swivel base

The type of base directly affects the high stool’s stability and mobility, and determines where it will work best. High bar stools on four legs are a sturdy and elegant option for most spaces – some models are also stackable, making storage and rearranging the space easier. Models on a sledge base stand out for their subtle, arched design, which lends a sense of lightness to the interior. The Cool office high stool on a balancing base is in a category of its own – the only model in the .mdd range offering 360° rotation, which is particularly well-suited for reception desks, bar counters and stand-up desks.

.mdd high stools are fitted with glides to protect the floor from scratches – the type of glide depends on the specific variant and configuration. For most products, it is possible to choose glides suited to the type of flooring, and for delicate surfaces such as parquet or laminate, the use of additional felt pads is recommended.

Ergonomics of a high stool: footrest, backrest and height adjustment

Sitting at a high worktop for extended periods requires a properly designed piece of furniture. Most .mdd models are equipped with a footrest to reduce leg fatigue and a backrest to provide lumbar support. It is advisable to choose a specific model based on the duration and nature of use. In dynamic office environments, such as co-working spaces or open-plan offices, the Cool stool is particularly well-suited – thanks to its gas lift, it allows for smooth height adjustment, and its balancing base works well when working in sit-to-stand mode.

Which materials should you choose? Plastic, metal, wood and upholstery

At .mdd, everyone can find a high stool to suit their space, not only in terms of design and height, but also in terms of material and finish.

In areas particularly prone to dirt – home kitchens, office canteens or catering areas – models made of plastic or metal work best, as they are easy to clean and remain durable even with heavy use.

For lounge areas, living rooms and formal reception spaces, upholstered bar stools are the most popular choice – velour fabrics and soft upholstery lend the interior a cosy and sophisticated feel. For those who appreciate natural warmth, there are models made of plywood, such as the Afi and New School, as well as the Baltic Soft Duo with a solid beech wood base.

For restaurant gardens, terraces and open-air bars, the Bris bar stool – designed specifically for outdoor spaces – is the perfect choice. Its steel, galvanised and powder-coated frame makes it suitable for changing weather conditions.

The wood-based materials used in the production of .mdd bar stools come from suppliers certified for responsible forest management under the FSC and PEFC schemes. Selected models are covered by an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), documenting the furniture’s environmental impact throughout its entire life cycle. All models are manufactured in Poland in accordance with European Union standards.

High stools as a cohesive design element

Like most .mdd products, our bar stools are designed as an integral part of the collection – their form, colour scheme and materials complement the desks, tables and armchairs from the same range. As a result, they are not merely an afterthought in the design, but a deliberately crafted element of the space – whether in a home kitchen, a professional office or a commercial premises.

All models meet ergonomic and safety standards, and the wide, varied range allows you to choose the right stool for different spaces and interior styles.
